K12 Advocates

A very wise person told me that to be an advocate you need to know 3 things: yourself, the person you are advocating for, and the system you are working with.

As parents, you advocate for your children from the moment they become the center of your world, it is part of the job description! Before you even became parents you were pretty accomplished self-advocates, used to figuring out what you needed and making it happen, with varying rates of success of course.

So if self-advocacy is a daily routine for you, and advocacy for your children is a natural part of parenting, how can you learn to use the skills you have to navigate the somewhat unfamiliar territory of the education system, and where can you gain new knowledge and skills to become an even more accomplished advocate?

At K12 Advocates we respect that you already know who you are, who your child is and that you are your child’s most passionate advocate. We hope that you will use us as a resource to help bring everything that you already know into sharper focus, and learn how to use your skills and knowledge to get the most benefit for your child out of the education system.

Many of us were told as children that our school years were the best years of our lives, we think they are just the start of a lifetime of wonderful years for your child as long as they learn some crucial life lessons: to advocate for themselves and for other people in compassionate ways, and to cherish, celebrate and understand our world and everyone in it in a way that is truly meaningful.

Attributes Of a Good Advocate

Your advocate should have the education, credentials, and knowledge to help you ensure a successful education for your child.

Make sure the advocate you choose:

  • Listens to what you say & know about your child
  • Analyzes & Explains all the reports about your child
  • Creates a professional "second opinion" on all reports
  • Builds an action plan for your child's success
  • Guides you through decisions for your child
  • Saves you time and stress in organizing the details
  • Advises you on the how-to of difficult discussions
  • Helps you feel confident & knowledgeable in meetings

At K12Advocates.com, we provide confidential & comprehensive services that will assist you through your child's IEP process: from the initial meeting, testing and evaluations, to creating a contract with the school that will produce the desired educational results for your child.
